Ernesto Aquino

GySgt/USMC Ret.

TAV Chairman (Nov 2023-Present)

Ernesto Aquino’s journey is one marked by courage, resilience, and a deep commitment to service. Enlisting in the US Marine Corps on June 26, 1995, Ernesto dedicated two decades of his life to the military cause. His unwavering dedication led him through five combat tours, including three in Iraq (2003, 2004, 2007) and two in Afghanistan (2010, 2012).

During his 2012 deployment, Ernesto faced adversity when an injury occurred during training, leading to his MEDIVAC from Afghanistan to Germany. There, he found himself assigned to the Wounded Warrior Battalion, West, marking a pivotal chapter in his life.

In late May 2012, Ernesto discovered the Turn Around for Veterans (TAV) program at Naval Medical Center Balboa. Under the guidance of dedicated TAV volunteers, Ernesto experienced a transformative journey through the therapeutic benefits of the program. Flourishing under TAV’s support, he gained membership to the San Diego Woodturners, providing him with valuable opportunities for classes and mentoring.

On July 31, 2015, after three challenging years of numerous procedures and surgeries to regain a quality life post-injury, Ernesto retired from the US Marine Corps. Turning a new chapter in his life, he chose to give back by volunteering with the very program that played a pivotal role in his healing process. By 2019, Ernesto ascended to the role of mentor within the San Diego Woodturners, exemplifying his commitment to fostering a supportive community.

In 2020, Ernesto took on additional responsibilities as a board member for the club, assuming the duties of the Instant Gallery position. November 1, 2023, marked a remarkable milestone in his journey as he assumed the role of TAV Chairman, completing a full circle and becoming a living testament to the transformative mission of the TAV program – “Empowering the Brave: Transforming Lives through Woodturning.”

As Ernesto looks towards the future, his vision extends beyond his remarkable personal journey. He envisions opening a Woodturning Learning Center, where he plans to share his extensive knowledge and skills as a woodturner. With a deep desire to pay it forward, he aims to create a lasting positive impact in the lives of those willing to embark on their own journey of learning and self-discovery. Ernesto’s story is not just one of survival but a testament to the incredible power of community, resilience, and the potential for positive transformation from a program such as Turn Around for Veterans.
