San Diego County Fair

The Del Mar Fair Booth is held every year in the month of June and ends the 4th of July.

The Del Mar Fair is the biggest event that the San Diego Woodturners are involved in and do so annually. It is held in the Design in Wood Exhibit Building on the fairgrounds in Del Mar.  The demand for volunteers is significant for this event. There are 160 shifts to fill during the Fair.  Our membership of 250 woodturners happily takes on the challenge.  We turn in excess of 3,000 tops and approximately 400 pens during the months leading up to the Fair as well as during the Fair.

In addition to  highlighting San Diego Woodturners, our booth at the Fair promotes the Turn Around for Veterans (TAV) program.  TAV provides weekly woodturning instruction at the Naval Medical Center (NMC) San Diego, The Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Pendleton and the Aspire Care Center operated by the Veterans Administration.  Donations to SDWT fund the maintenance of lathes at each site and all materials. Our volunteers provide instruction free of charge to all interested service members and veterans.  TAV  assists participants during recovery from injuries and introduces them to a potential lifelong hobby. We are truly meeting a need!

The Fair is also an International Show, where we show off our craft and introduce the public to the wonders of woodturning.  Fair goers and especially young people can’t help but stop by and watch with amazement small pieces of wood being transformed into beautiful spinning tops and pens.  A video display shows many of the turnings by our members.  There are bowls, hollow forms, vases, utensils, and miscellaneous other pieces that can only be formed/shaped by using a lathe.

If you have questions about the San Diego Woodturners and our part in sharing our craft with people visiting the Del Mar Fair, please contact Steve Frick. Steve is in charge of our efforts at the Fair and would be happy to answer your questions at TheFairBooth@sdwt.org
